Strangford arrived at St John’s B confident of overturning a
40 point deficit but were unable to produce the form that won them the League
title losing the match by 19 points. Sean Poland who was in terrific form
throughout the match started the encounter against Colin McKinty with a four
point advantage but Marty Trainor 15 point advantage over Terry Murphy but Jim
Mills did well to restrict the League’s No1 Joe Mc Conville to 6 point winning
margin so after 3 games Strangford had pulled back 17 points. But in the second
round of matches St John’s added 11 points to their total of 34. Strangford now
the final round was going to tough against a determined home side. Sean Poland
did well to restrict Joe Mc Conville to a 3 point advantage and rightly earned
the accolade as man of the match leaving his team mates to ensure victory. To their credit both Colin Mc Kinty and Marty
Trainor worked hard for every point but it the end it wasn’t enough to prevent a
home victory and a passage into the semi-finals.
